Paddling Season: Protecting Your Shoulders on the Water
Manitoba summers are short, and when the lakes finally open up, a lot of people go from zero paddling to several hours in a single weekend. Whether you are on a kayak at Falcon Lake, a canoe on the Whiteshell, or a stand-up paddleboard on the Red River, the shoulder is doing a lot of quiet work. Understanding what that work actually involves makes it much easier to keep your shoulders comfortable through the season.
What paddling asks of the shoulder
A single paddle stroke looks simple, but it is a coordinated sequence: the arm reaches forward, the blade catches the water, and the muscles around the shoulder blade stabilize while the rotator cuff keeps the ball of the shoulder centered in its socket. Repeat that a few thousand times over an afternoon and you have a genuine endurance task for a small group of muscles.
The rotator cuff is a set of four muscles whose main job is not raw power but control — keeping the head of the humerus centered and stable while larger muscles move the arm.1 During repetitive overhead and reaching sports, these muscles fire in specific patterns to protect the joint, and when they fatigue, that centering job suffers.2 Paddling is not an overhead throwing sport, but it shares the same underlying demand: control and endurance under repetition rather than a single explosive effort. The shoulder blade matters as much as the arm
Behind the rotator cuff sits the scapula, or shoulder blade, and the muscles that anchor it to your ribcage and spine. The scapula is the stable base the arm moves from. When the muscles controlling it fatigue or lose their timing — a pattern clinicians call scapular dyskinesis — the whole shoulder has to work harder and less efficiently.3 For a paddler, a tired, poorly controlled shoulder blade late in a long day is often where nagging shoulder soreness starts.
Power comes from the trunk, not the arm
Here is the part many recreational paddlers miss: efficient paddling is driven by trunk rotation, not by pulling hard with the arms. The core rotates, the larger muscles of the back and torso transmit force to the paddle, and the arms and shoulders largely guide and connect that force to the blade.
This is a good example of what we call regional interdependence — the idea that a complaint in one area is often influenced by how the regions above and below are working. A shoulder that aches after paddling may be doing too much precisely because the trunk and hips are doing too little. Improving rotation through the mid-back changes the demand on the shoulder itself. The real issue is usually load, not technique
When shoulders get cranky in July, the culprit is frequently not bad form — it is a sudden spike in volume. The tissue simply was not prepared for three hours of paddling when the previous nine months involved none. Research on training and injury consistently points to rapid increases in workload, rather than the activity itself, as a key driver of overuse complaints.4 As the saying goes, there are no bad exercises, only too much too soon.
That reframes the whole conversation. You do not need to fear paddling or treat your shoulder as fragile. You need to give the tissue a reasonable on-ramp.
Simple ways to pace and prepare
- Build up gradually. If your first outing of the year is a marathon, expect soreness. Shorter early sessions let the shoulder and its supporting muscles adapt.
- Warm up before you launch. A few minutes of arm circles, trunk rotations, and band or bodyweight rows wakes up the scapular muscles before they are asked to work.
- Train rotation and pulling in the off-weeks. Rows, carries, and rotational core work build the endurance that paddling draws on. These are the muscles that protect the shoulder over a long day.
- Rotate through your trunk. Let your torso do the work and think of your arms as connectors. This is easier to feel when the paddle stays closer to the boat and your top hand does not cross far past your midline.
- Take breaks. Fatigue is when control fades. Short rests over a long outing keep your mechanics honest.
Normal soreness versus something to watch
General muscle soreness in the days after a big paddle is expected and usually settles on its own. It is worth paying closer attention if you notice sharp catching with specific movements, night pain that disrupts sleep, weakness lifting the arm, or discomfort that keeps building outing after outing rather than settling. Paddling is one of the best ways to spend a Manitoba summer, and healthy shoulders are mostly a matter of respecting the load and letting the trunk do its share of the work.
